AMA Charter # 3465

      Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month, beginning at about 7:00 P.M.  Meetings are held at the Clark County Airport Flying Site during the summer and at Aircraft Specialists, Inc., on the Airport grounds when Daylight Savings Time is not in effect.

    The SKYLINERS Model Airplane Club is a club devoted to building and flying of model aircraft.  The only requirements for membership being interest in model aviation, and payment of dues to the Treasurer.  Visitors are always welcome, however, if you intend to fly with us on a regular basis, you must become a member of the club.  AMA membership is required to fly

A few key findings include:

* It flies like a trainer (very stable in level flight, slow to respond to handle input and no hunting). The cg location, 2.5in behind leading edge, is a conservative, stable CG placement. Moving it back near the wings high point and center spar (almost another inch back) will be tried in stages to see the effect on the sluggish responses. To achieve the directions' cg, it took the stock muffler instead of a tongue version and 1 oz of added nose weight. I'd like to note the all-up weight. But, my cheep Chinese copy of an already cheep Japanese digital fish scale has died.

* Plane looses a lot of line tension in overheads. Will work on line adjustment location. Currently it's 1" behind the 2.5in CG. I did not follow the directions on this locking in the line location. The directions pretty much had the leadout location on the CG. It will also be quite easy to increase the RPM of the engine with the 10X6 Master Airscrew prop... as well as try other types and sizes of props to coax a little more flying speed (but not much). I'm getting low to mid 5 second lap times now.

* I'll leave the R/C oriented muffler pressure and 10% Omega RC fuel as the rule. This is what RC folks are used to and the little Thunder Tiger GP .42 (with pinned RC throttle) thrives in this environment.

* The training nature of plane precludes the need to seek out the perfect 4-2-4 break or work with the increased complexity of Uniflow plumbing.

* The control rod seemed innovative, but is really overkill. It isn't adjustable and is heavy. The rod end for mounting to the bellcrank must be inserted all the way, then locked down. I had to leave out the nut at the elevator end to get the clevis adjustment correct for a level elevator. The plane's directions talked about the nut, but didn't include one. Hmmm. The unit is quite strong and does not seem to need any bracing. At some point, I'll probably replace it with something lighter and more adjustable. But, it's in there and it works fine, for now.

* The PT-19 main landing gear is strongly built. It won't fold under on grass field landings like the Ultra Stick/Pizzaz/3 Sizes of Funtana/Twist/Tango ships I've flown. But the 2 in wheels are too small for any but the smoothest grass fields. I'll probably replace with larger wheels.

* * * * *

The C/L purist will probably have nothing to do with this kit and have little good to say about it- other than it's applicability for new or re-newed C/L pilots. From their perspective, it doesn't have the world class construction and finish nor does it cut those tight square turns so crucial to a high score. But, that's more proof that Hangar 9 hit the intended target. It is of the same quality and has some of the same cost short cuts as any Hangar 9 sport class RC ARF. It's more than good enough for the intended purpose. An Advanced or Expert C/L pilot would see this plane the same way an IMAC or RC Pattern flyer would view a Goldberg Eagle or a Sig Kadet. That's what the H 9 PT-19 can be for C/L.

In terms of competition, the plane can handle the "Beginner Class" and "OTS" maneuvers OK. A middle tier Intermediate pilot or above should not even consider this plane to fly in competition. But that's not what it was intended for.

So, what am I going to do with mine? Well, it is NOT a replacement for my Pathfinder/FW-190 in PT-40 nor my Nobler for precision flying (if I can call what I do "Precise"). It's not even going to replace the 35 year old Ringmaster/Fox .35 I still fly- nor the NIB Ringmaster that is about to see the light of day. In it's recommended trim, all of the above planes will outfly the PT-19 in any set of standard maneuvers. Once the CG is another inch back and the leadouts move accordingly... we'll see. Can it fly as well as the Ringmaster.
